‘Tis Always the Season To Be
Active
Every
season has its pros and cons; one of my cons for winter is that I hate the
cold weather! This usually results in me participating in the commonly known activity: snuggle season (a popular term used in
the winter time, that involves staying in and watching Netflix while snuggled
up to your beloved ones or a comfy blanket).
But,
there’s just one word that doesn’t stay true to the definition and that’s the
verb ‘Active’. Remember the term Couch
potato? It’s also a term used for those who veg out in the summer when
there are no excuses not to be outside enjoying the weather.
Well, frankly I see a resemblance in the term couch potato and snuggle season, and that is that there are no
excuses for dismissing physical activity. This year, I’ve been able to
keep warm, active and enjoyed lots of quality time with my family. I guess one
could say I’ve even come to really enjoy the cold weather!
Here
are three of my tricks, Just do It
with your family this winter instead of snuggle season and I guarantee you a
healthier and active winter season.
1. Pond
Hockey
We’ve
all heard it before, that hockey and Canada go together like winter and snow,
but hockey isn’t always the most affordable hobby for everyone. One budget
savvy trick I do with my family is bringing my skates to the pond instead of going
to a skating rink. Pros? For one it’s free and we get to enjoy the
good outdoors and fresh crisp winter air.
So
organize a match the Roberts vs. the Pomeroy’s and get your family together for
weekly practices. You’ll be sweating outside in no time, just remember to stay hydrated!
2. Go Shopping
We know it’s usually a given to be
in a mall around Christmas time, but did you know that it’s actually good for
you? Shopping
is physical consisting of long walks indoors. You can enjoy the free heat and
the pleasure of browsing (you don’t always have to buy anything). Most malls
even have banks and grocery stores so that you can run your errands in the
convenience of one location.
So get your
sneakers and head to the mall with the whole family. I even like to set up mall
challenges to make a trip more interesting and interactive. “Who can find the
first shop that sells coffee or hot chocolate” (O.k that one may be more for my
own benefit).
What better way to get the whole family outside and staying warm than starting up a bonfire? You can even make a day of it by first building a forte or a snowman then after relax and chat around a warm bonfire while snuggled up in your snow attire. This will give you and your family a nice break from your daily dependency on devices and a chance to enjoy quality face to face time with your loved ones. This is very important for your children’s social development, as well as a great way for you to interact and keep them active. Don’t have the space for a bonfire? A hot coco on the porch after a busy day building a forte is just as refreshing and cozy.
